The Summer Slump: Why it’s normal, and how to push through

As the sun shines brighter and the days are longer, many would think our motivation to train would increase, but instead, many of us find our motivation starting to dip. If you’ve been feeling a little off your game lately, you’re not alone. Welcome to the summer slump, and yes, it’s completely normal.

Why the summer slump happens

Summer brings with it a change in routine. Longer and brighter days mean we want to make the most of it. Holidays, social events, warmer weather, all contribute to a general shift in pace and can disrupt our usual training rhythm. It’s easy to feel like you’re losing momentum, but this isn’t a sign of failure. It’s just part of the natural ebb and flow of life and training!

How to talk to yourself during these moments

The way you speak to yourself during these moments matters. Instead of beating yourself up for missing a session or feeling unmotivated, try this:

  • Remind yourself that slumps are temporary.

  • Focus on what you can do, not what you haven’t done.

  • Remember, maintenance is a goal in itself, and a huge achievement.

  • Reconnect with your ‘why’ — the reason you started training in the first place.

  • Celebrate small wins. Showing up is the biggest victory, always.

You never regret a workout!

We’ve all had those moments where we consider cancelling a class or skipping a session. Us coaches have jumped on more classes of late, and there is no doubt that we too experience this. It’s human nature to overthink a workout (or anything challenging!) before it starts. We often imagine how hard it will be or how tired we feel, when in reality, it’s just a workout, and once it’s done? We feel better. Every. Single. Time.

Movement boosts mood, clears the mind, and reminds us of what we’re capable of. So next time you’re tempted to skip, remember: you don’t have to feel motivated to take action. You don’t have to be in perfect condition. You just have to turn up. You just have to start.

It is perhaps cliché, but we preach mastering the art of showing up. In such circumstances that you really “can’t be bothered” or you’re “not feeling it”, simply say to yourself, “see how you feel”. 9 times out of 10, you’ll start warming up and then have a really good successful workout, and for the odd one that may be a grind, you still turned up and won!

Ask any CrossFitter. These are the workouts that count, and you’ll gain more mentally and perhaps even physically from these workouts.

Final thoughts

The summer slump is real, but it doesn’t have to derail your progress. Be kind to yourself, stay connected to your community, and keep showing up, even if it’s not perfect. Progress isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency over time.
